Chow Baby Delivers

A few weeks ago, I wrote a brief note here about Chow Baby, a new service here in Austin that delivers vegetarian meals to you home or workplace every week. I got a nice note from the chefs that run the service and got to try out their vegetarian chili and salad, and I really liked what I got. I live and work in north Austin, so they had to schedule me for Wednesday morning. Everything arrived in compost-ready containers. The chili was a nice-sized portion in a bowl; it had a great texture, but it wasn't too spicy. The salad was a mix of field greens, carrots, and cucumber with a nifty orange-chipotle dressing, and the brown rice was seasoned with green onions. I also got one of their Chomp! vegan lemon and coconut cookies to go with it.

Their upcoming menu for November looks really good. They've moved to delivering twice a week -- on Wednesday and on Friday. You can still get in an order for this week if you go to their website tonight or during the day on Monday. This week has a Middle Eastern theme with falafel, hummus, and couscous on Wednesday and lentil soup and fried rice on Friday. Other highlights for this month include tempeh tacos, mushroom barley soup, and hand-rolled veggie sushi.

Hey, and as an added bonus for getting to the bottom of the review: if you order and mention vegoutaustin.com in the comments, they'll give you free delivery during November 2006 (sorry people of the future reading this through some sort of search engine!). Their basic price is $10 a meal ($9/meal if you order 3 or more at a time), with extra charges for delivery, vegan cookies, natural root beer, and extra portions. I'm going to get my own order right after I post this.
