A Trip to Kenichi
Tuesday was fancy eating night with my friends. We usually try one expensive place each year, and this time it was Kenichi, the sushi restaurant at the corner of 5th and Colorado. We ate fairly early, so it wasn't very crowded, but it did pick up a bit by the time we left.
The interior decor is quite nice and trendy. They have a medium sized bar area with welded metal tables, a sushi bar, and a nice dining room.
The first intelligence test of the evening was the restrooms. Kenichi uses a abstract fish icon in the logo, so the two doors were marked with two upward fishes (M for Men) or two downward fishes (W for Women). Over the course of the evening, I passed this test, but one of my friends made the wrong choice and mild hilarity ensued.
The menu is definitely seafood oriented, but there were plenty on vegetarian selections. I had some very good broccoli and sweet potato tempura ($4 an order) and the cucumber salad ($5) was fresh and crisp.
For my rolls, I tried one of both of their veggie items. The vegetable roll ($7) wasn't very distinctive, but the tempura asparagus roll ($7.50) was some of the best veggie sushi I've ever had, with crisp battered asparagus embedded in a tofu skin roll with cucumber and avocado.
It is quite expensive for what you get, and they could learn how to do more flavorful edamame from their neighbor Noodle-ism. Still, I had fun, and I'd certainly consider dining here again on a special occasion.

for future reference, the tempura batter has egg whites in it. and the miso soup contains bonito and fish stock.
