Where Can I Get a Salad in Austin?
This thread on LiveJournal's austincommunity brought up the topic of salad bars. Austin's got a few chains with Fresh Choice, Souper Salad, and Jason's Deli all featuring big salad bars. In my opinion, Fresh Choice is the best one for vegetarians, with a wider selection of ingredients and a better selection of soups, including at least one vegetarian soup. Jason's Deli is good for a change of pace with their vegetarian French Onion soup, while Souper Salad is functional and less expensive, but a bit of a dart toss for having vegetarian specialty items.
In reading the thread, I was informed of the existence of South Austin's Baby Greens. The Austin Chronicle gave them a glowing review two years ago. On looking at their menu, I think I'll have to make a visit the next time I head south of the river.
There are a few other places with salad bars. Many of the local pizza buffets have simple salads; Mr. Gatti's and DoubleDave's fall into this category. Hickory Street Bar & Grill on Congress Avenue also has a salad bar along with their food bar, but I don't remember being that impressed with it. If you like pickles, you can even make a basic salad out of the toppings bar at the local Fuddrucker's while you're dressing your gardenburger.

I am not a big salad eater, but when the mood strikes, for me nothing beats Tuscany. It is a little cafe in the Riata complex and does coffee, lunches, and sweets. Great stuff.
