Watch out for the Rice

| | Comments (3)

Today at lunch at the yummy TacoDeli, I found out that their standard rice is made with chicken broth. Boo. However, they keep a supply of vegetarian rice for making veggie burritos, and they will gladly substitute the vegetarian rice on their plate specials. They also confirmed that all of their beans were vegetarian. So, I give them a big plus for being responsive to my questions and accommodating for vegetarians, but a slight minus for not noting the rice's chicken flavoring on their menu.

I sometimes find it gastronomically disturbing to find the potatoes at Taco Deli were fried in porkfat...They were sloppy sometimes when I called orders in and added eggs to my potatoe tacos...I don't recommend it unless you are a cerdo-vegetarian...and I truly wonder about the beans...but will try to trust if they say they don't have lard, etc. in them...Peace

The potatoes at Tacodeli are NOT fried in porkfat. They are simply mashed potatoes with itty bitty jalapenos mashed in there. And there definitely isn't any lard in the beans either.

Thanks for all of the positive comments on this blog. I am very interested in keeping you guys informed about our food so here is some info.

We do not use any form of animal product in either our black or pinto beans, and we fry our black refried's in Canola Non-hydrogenated oil.

Our potatoes have never been fried in pork fat, but we do add butter.

The rice is made with chicken broth, but we offer a brown whole grain alternative made with veggie stock.

We are not vegetarians, but do care a great deal about what we eat at the restaurant (I've eaten 2 meals a day for almost 6 years here)so I hope our efforts to keep the saturated stuff out for ourselves provides a good option to the vegetarian community.
