This week Ms. Particular and I went to Burnet Road's Dog Almighty, a hot dog place nestled in the Farmer's Market, between Anderson and 2222. I mentioned them in the site news last year, but had not made a formal review... until NOW!

BEN: It was a nice day, but there was construction work outside with workers installing some sort of yellow conduit. That didn't interfere with ordering or eating, but the actual walking into the building was a little delayed.

We'd been here before, so I decided to try their Hyde Park veggie dog (2.75), with chili and mustard, and a Pfluger Dog ($3), with kraut, onions, and deli mustard.

MS. P: We call this place "Omnidog Heaven" because everything can be made vegetarian. On previous visits, I have indulged in hand-dipped corn dogs ($2 each). They are ehhhhhhx-cellent. This time I decided to try the gardenburger ($3). Bleh. Boca patty, iceberg lettuce, a big dollop of mayonnaise which I had to scrape off... underwhelmed.

BEN: My dogs arrived in good shape. The Pfluger dog had a pile of homemade sauerkraut which was quite fresh and a nice helping of very strong dijon mustard. The Hyde Park dog was topped with ample amounts of their vegan chili and line of yellow mustard. The actual hot dog is also vegan, and does a good job of supporting the surrounding ingredients, although it doesn't have much flavor on its own.

MS. P: Let's talk accessories. The lemonade is nothing to email home about.

BEN: But they have "teamonade", a big jug of iced tea mixed 50/50 with lemonade, which seems like a nice idea to me.

MS. P: Speaking of mixing, they do this weird thing with the fries. If you order them, you'll get a basket that's half straight-cut and half crinkle-cut. Only the crinkle cut fries are any good. I think they're seasoned, where the straight-cut ones are very plain.

BEN: The chili, hot dogs, and kraut are vegan. However, the batter on the corn dogs is made with buttermilk, and we didn't ask about the buns. They also serve a plain salad...

MS. P: But it's not really a salad, just iceberg lettuce. Again, we have an accessory problem. They don't even have Baked Lays, which is a staple of my diet when eating out at sandwichy-type places.

BEN: Still, these are all things that can easily be remedied, and overall, we're both quite pleased with Dog Almighty and will likely eat there again and again. They're a great bargain, and they really go out of their way to handle us vegetarians.

MS.P: I would like to add that the accessory problem does not detract from my love for the Dog Almighty corn dogs.

since you posted this review, they've replaced the half and half fries with hand-cut fries. just as yum as the crinkles.

This place rocks. I'm disappointed that they no longer offer delivery, but eating there is not at all unpleasant since it's situated in and around historical buildings (colonialish limestone, etc.). The prices for quality cannot be beat.

I have heard great things about this restaurant and was very excited about going. When we receieved our order they failed to let us know that the meat and non meat products were color coded. My partner bit into her corn dog and asked me if mine tasted right! Come to find out, she had my turkey dog and I had her Vegie dog(mind you she is a vegetarian and ordered all vegetarian products). When we asked to get new ones, the man made it seem like a problem. He then said "oh well next time know that this color means meat and this color means vegie) Thanks for telling us before hand, she then was sick for the remainder of the evening. Yet she still eats there, so her bad experience did not keep her from coming back for more, talk about true blue dedication!!!
