Star of India sits in a shopping center on the north side of Anderson Lane, a few doors down from the Stein Mart. I've been here many times since I've started working in north Austin, and I've never been disappointed. While they do have a menu from which to order, the focus here is the buffet. Usual contents include some salad, a couple of soups, naan, samosas, and four different vegetarian entrees. They follow the lead of other local Indian buffets -- all the meat items are at one end, so once you see red chicken, you know you can stop. Saag Paneer is a common item here, a spinach and homemade cheese dish, and usually quite good. The service is also nice, with frequent drink refills. I like their iced tea which is made from a different blend of teas than the usual Lipton-ite drink served here in Austin.

Lunch is $6 with dinner and the weekends a slightly higher $8.

Ever wonder what the immigrants who open some of these ethnic restaurants might have done in their own countries? This one will make you think, "truck driver," or "garbage collector," but certainly not "chef." This place is weird (noticed beef on the menu; unheard of in Indian restaurants). I ordered from the menu, as I dislike hours old buffet food. The quantities served were immense, but no one would want to eat it. The only thing tandoori about the chicken was the red color. Otherwise, it tasted like bad, overcooked roast chicken. I'm from California. Maybe Indian spices are expensive here. There was no Indian flavor to it at all. The lamb pieces on this tandoori grill were all grey and dried out. The shrimp had a fishy order. Didn't even smell like an Indian restaurant. To add insult to injury, the masala chai was nothing but lipton tea with milk. And then the air conditioner vent above started dripping water on me. Real healthy dripping on the food!

I have been to star of india many time. i love this place. The food is the best in town they, also offer lunch and dinner buffet.
